Not only could this help you protect more of your clients, it could also help you activate new revenue streams – taking your sales potential into the fast lane.

Our streamlined underwriting process makes Life Cover easy to sell and easy to buy.

With a few quick questions and an instant decision, it’s a simple conversation to have with your clients.

Just log on to Mortgage Brain’s The Key and complete the mortgage fact find as usual.

If your clients want protection, they just need to answer a few extra questions in the ‘health and lifestyle’ section.

Then simply confirm their protection needs and choose ‘Royal London – Streamlined’ in the provider menu.

Within minutes you’ll get a decision and if your client is eligible, you’ll get a quote sent directly to your key account.

From here you can go straight to our quote and apply system to finalise the application

We’ll ask for things like your client’s GP details, payment information, and whether they want to put their plan in trust.

This information won’t impact the decision your client has already been given.

Streamlined underwriting means the protection process is tailored to your mortgage conversation.

And your clients get the same great Life Cover product – including access to Helping Hand. It just takes less time.

It’s an integrated process with Mortgage Brain’s The Key that incorporates the protection conversation and application into the mortgage fact find. It aims to make mortgage-related protection easier to sell and easier to buy.

There’s a new set of questions available within the mortgage fact find on The Key. So if a client is interested in protection, they just need to answer a few extra health and lifestyle questions and confirm their protection needs (for example the amount of cover and term of their plan) to apply for protection.

After a few minutes, you’ll get a quote and a guaranteed immediate decision sent to your Key account. If your client is happy to go ahead, you can then log on to the Royal London quote and apply system to complete the application, finalising their protection plan quickly and easily during your mortgage meeting.

This new process is available to all advisers who have a Core account on The Key.

It’s available to all your clients who are considering taking out Life Cover as part of their mortgage application. The cover is limited to a maximum sum assured of £500k and clients need to be 55 years old or younger to apply.

    The short, simple process and immediate decision means you can have the protection conversation with your clients seamlessly during a mortgage meeting. This could potentially lead to more protection sales and an increased income for your business.
  • The benefits for your clients:
    The simplified application means your clients spend less time answering health and lifestyle questions. As there is no additional need for underwriting it makes the whole process less invasive for your client. The immediate and guaranteed decision allows your clients to get the cover they need in just a few minutes.

No, Life Cover available through streamlined underwriting is the same as the cover that’s available within our Personal Menu Plan and your clients will get all the same benefits – including access to our Helping Hand service.

No, the price will be the same - it’s the same Personal Menu Plan Life Cover product, just a quicker journey. Premiums are always based on your clients’ risk factors, such as their age, regardless of how they apply for cover.

Yes, the commission is a 30% reduction in the Lautro rate for our Personal Menu Plan. This is primarily due to the reduced amount of time needed to complete a streamlined application.

There are three lifestyle questions:

  1. your client’s height
  2. your client’s weight
  3. their smoker status

There are four medical questions:

  1. asks about ongoing tests / investigations
  2. asks about overnight stays in hospital
  3. asks if your client has ever had: cancer; heart attack, heart condition or surgery on their heart; diabetes;  stroke or mini-stroke. 
  4. asks about excessive alcohol consumption and other drug use, and suicidal thoughts


We also ask about any issues with previous life insurance applications.

If your client has been affected by any of the medical issues mentioned above, they won’t be eligible for Life Cover through our streamlined process, however they’ll be free to go down your traditional whole-of-market advice process.

If you do not have an account on The Key, you will need to open one. You’ll need to have terms of business with Royal London.

Once you’ve registered with The Key or if you’re an existing Key user then streamlined underwriting will be available to you once a couple of one-time setup activities are complete:

You’ll be able to access the extra protection questions within your account during your usual mortgage fact find. If you’ve not already done so, you’ll need to register with Royal London’s quote and apply service in order to finalise your clients’ protection plans.

The compliance process for streamlined underwriting is the same as for our Personal Menu Plans - ultimately it is at the discretion of each agency/network.

To allow us to improve the service we offer to our customers and for quality assurance purposes, we’ll ask for your clients’ GP details when you finalise their protection plan within our quote and apply system.

This information will only be used by Royal London to perform random ‘spot-checks’ to make sure the streamlined underwriting system is working as it should. This information won’t impact the decision your client has already been given.

If your client is ineligible for Life Cover through our streamlined process, they’re free to go down your traditional whole-of-market advice process.
